An epic summer at camp begins with great camp counselors. YMCA Camp Santa Maria staff members are mature, responsible, caring, and are committed to youth development. Staff members are carefully selected through a rigorous hiring process and go through a federal criminal background check. All staff members complete an in-depth and thorough staff training and are Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified. Staff members also have training and certifications in specific program areas and all water and pool activities are supervised by certified lifeguards. YMCA Camp Santa Maria maintains a 1 to 6 counselor to camper ratio.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: I’ve spent the last 5 years moving up and down the West Coast. I taught Kindergarten in Alaska; taught at an Environmental Science School in Big Bear, CA; spent a couple of summers working at a nature based day camp in Seattle; directed the community outreach day camp program with the Portland Audubon Society and worked as a substitute teacher in the Portland area.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: The last few years I’ve been taking a gap year after finishing higher school in 2009, I’m working full time at boost juice bars at the moment saving money to come to summer camp. I’ve been teaching dance (contemporary and jazz) and zumba to children and adults at my studio which has been such a rewarding job and of course going to the gym and keeping fit.

Why did you want to work at camp this summer?: I had such a great experience attending a YMCA camp 3 summers in a row when I was younger. Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years:
In the summer after my senior year of high school, I traveled to Germany on a “friendship exchange.” I lived with a German family for a week, traveled to Munich, and saw the Alps—it was a blast! I spent most of last summer working, with the exception of my vacation to Colorado where I did mountain biking, paragliding, white water rafting, hiking, and horseback riding. This year, I have been very busy with school. I also work as a nanny for two families during the week. I am going to California for the first time right before camp starts—I’m going to learn how to surf! Pretty gnarly, huh?

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: I have actually been trying to figure out what the last chapter of my life will be. I worked as a Merchant Marine for a few years in the Gulf of Mexico. I got a chance to return to Europe (Bergen, Norway) last summer. I have also spent a lot of hours in the saddle enjoying my passion to ride.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years:
I graduated from a prep school in Massachusetts in May 2010, and spent fall 2010 enrolled in a semester with the National Outdoor Leadership School in Wyoming. I spent 3 months backpacking, rock climbing, canyoneering, and skiing. Now I’m a full time student at Appalachian State in North Carolina where I spend a lot of time climbing and bouldering.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: I worked at Sky High Ranch Girl Scout camp near Woodland Park in summer 2009. I have had several temp office jobs since then. I spend most of my time at home with my two golden retrievers, “Sandy” & “Hannah Montana.”
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I camped on my honeymoon! I’ve always loved camping and I was a Girl Scout and Girl Scout Leader for my daughter when she was growing up. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with young people at summer camps in 2003 & 2009.

Why did you want to work at camp this summer?: Summer camp is indeed a calling, and I am one of those who has been called upon. I love the community of summer camp and all the fun that goes along with it. I grew up going to a YMCA camp, but did not grow up living in Colorado – so I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to play in the outdoors.

I graduated from Topeka High in 2010 and just finished my freshman year at CU Boulder. I love swimming, hiking, biking, and being outdoors. My other hobbies include reading and travelling. Some of my favorite memories from the past several years include taking the train to Chicago and staying in a hostel for spring break my senior year, competing in the Topeka Tin Man Triathlon last summer, and learning to ski and rock climb this year.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: I lived in Denver for two years where I really began to love the outdoors. I started kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, and backpacking. While I was here I also worked in Americorps and as a physical therapy aid. I moved to Winchester, VA last summer for graduate school. This May I completed my first fieldwork at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan exploring their culture and healthcare system.
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I have a 7 year old daughter myself so you can be reassured that I will treat your child as my own while they are here at camp. I am very excited to be spending the summer in Colorado helping your child grow in the outdoors.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: A few years ago, I moved from Chicago to Colorado and started attending the University of Colorado at Denver. While attending UCD, I continued to climb and get outside. After about a year of being here in Colorado, I started to work for REI as well as route-set at a climbing gym. Ever since then, that is what I have been doing. In addition to that, I started to travel abroad including Rwanda and Uganda with Nepal being in the very near future.
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I am an avid rock climber. I have been climbing for about four years. On and off at first but now very diligently. I helped to developed the on-site climbing area last year at Camp Santa Maria.

What did/do you study?: I’m a Public Relations major; Family, Youth & Community Sciences minor.
Favorite Movie(s): Titanic and Gone With The Wind are classics!
Favorite type(s) of music: I really love all types of music from what’s on the radio right now, to country music, to Broadway tunes, to probably some stuff you’ve never heard of before!
Who would play you in a movie?: If there were a movie about my life, I’m not quite sure anyone would be able to get the part right, I might have to play it myself! I do know Tim Tebow would be the leading man, though!
Why did you want to work at camp this summer?: I grew up going to summer camp for 5 years in North Carolina. I’ve been stuck in school for the past couple years, but now that I have a free summer, I’m dying to get back to the mountains!
Favorite snack food: Oreos and homemade trail mix!
Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: When I stopped going to summer camp, I spent a summer traveling and volunteering in Thailand. After I graduated high school, I was accepted early to the University of Florida and I have been cheering on the gators ever since!
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I have never been to Colorado before, so this is going to be a summer of new for a lot of us! I am so passionate about making sure your children have the best summer of their lives at camp! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make your weeks here at camp better!

Why did you want to work at camp this summer?: I’m really looking forward to working at camp this summer because being at camp and getting outdoors are my favorite ways to take a break from school.

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and went to high school at the Chicagoland Jewish High School. While I was there I got interested in community service, student council, and being outdoors. My summers are usually spent lounging or being outside working on backpacking skills. I’m currently a freshman at Oberlin College in the cozy town of Oberlin, OH, spending my time studying, doing some photography, and enjoying school.
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I always had the time of my life as a camper at every camp I went to so I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be a counselor!
Anything else?: If I could have dinner with one person it would be Joan Didion because her writing really makes me think.

Why did you want to work at camp this summer?: I want to work at Camp Santa Maria because I want to work with young people in a beautiful place!

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years:
I graduated from the Community College of Denver with an Associate degree and then moved up to Gunnison to go to Western State College of Colorado to work on a bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Outdoor Education. I joined the Mountain Rescue team, and guided for the student guiding service on campus. I have also spent a lot of time climbing, canyoneering, helping out at my church, and hanging out with my family.
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you:
I can’t wait so spend another summer instructing rock climbing and seeing young people change as they grow in self-confidence through reaching their goals.

Why did you want to work at camp this summer: I wanted the opportunity to spend time in nature while using my knowledge of childhood development and psychology. This is the perfect combination of the two.

Brief story of what you have been up to for the last few years: The last couple of years I have been trying to find my niche. At the beginning of this year I took off on a personal and spiritual journey from east to west coast. I worked in Colorado at a ski resort, spent a month in California camping, and now I am at Summer Camp. What more could I ask for?
Something you would like parents/campers to know about you: I want everyone to have the best time they can and learn more about themselves in the process. Originality is underrated. We all need to discover and cherish our uniqueness!

Brief story of what you have been up to over the last few years: Studying at home in England for my Personal Training diploma.
