Greetings from the Camp Administration

Taylor Jordan - Camp Director

Hey Y’all!

Welcome to YMCA Camp Santa Maria! I’m Taylor, Camp Director, and I am very excited to be a part of the CSM family. I originally hail from Chattanooga, TN where I grew up and graduated from the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga with a B.S. in Outdoor Recreation with a focus on Outdoor Leadership. As a child, I was a day camper at sailing camp from ages 6-12, when I began spending summers at one-week overnight camps. I began working at a day camp straight out of high school and have spent every summer since working for the Y at a variety of residential and day camps, with the exception of one summer spent as a bike mechanic, instructor and trip leader. I discovered my love for camp and desire to be a part of the camp world at a young age and can’t wait to share that experience and knowledge with campers and staff!

In my free time, I love to bike, hike, camp and read. I strive to spend as much time as possible outside to feel more connected to the natural world around us.

Looking forward to another great summer at Camp Santa Maria!

Our Staff

An epic summer at camp begins with great camp counselors. YMCA Camp Santa Maria staff members are mature, responsible and caring, and are committed to youth development. Staff members are carefully selected through a rigorous hiring process and complete a federal criminal background check, including fingerprinting, which checks their name against the national sex offenders database. They are also interviewed and must submit three references. All staff members complete an in-depth and thorough staff training and are First Aid and CPR certified. Staff members also have training and certifications in specific program areas. All water and pool activities are supervised by certified lifeguards. YMCA Camp Santa Maria maintains a 1 to 6 counselor to camper ratio.

Do you want to work at camp?

Here is what we are looking for:

Each day for the YMCA Camp Santa Maria staff is demanding and brings new challenges, as well as rewarding experiences. Our counselors and support crew work hard, and are dedicated to building positive relationships with campers and their families. Our goal is to create an environment where campers feel safe and supported.

Camp is an exciting, exhausting, demanding and rewarding opportunity. A successful camp counselor is truly committed to providing his or her campers with a great experience, helping them to grow, develop new skills and create relationships. Great camp counselors are unique in their ability to put the needs of others before their own, and work on behalf of the Camp Santa Maria community.

Do you have great skills?

Great staff members are nurturing, patient and fun. They have the ability to make campers feel comfortable in a new environment, help them to make friends and bond with fellow campers, and help them build confidence and lifelong skills. While we have lots of fun and adventurous activities at YMCA Camp Santa Maria, our most important focus is on youth development. An interest in teaching, leading and working with youth is key for all of our staff members.

Are you creative and love developing elaborate games and activities? We strive to provide an atmosphere where campers can be creative and follow the guideline of, “If it's not against the rules, and people are safe, then you can do it." We are looking for staff who can help guide campers in how to be creative and learn that it is all right to fail at something! At least have fun while trying something new!

Programs like fine arts and filmmaking allow campers to express their creativity and to share their work with others. Camp Santa Maria staff members teach campers technical skills and introduce them to a variety of different art media and skills that will last them a lifetime. We are looking for staff members who have a passion for art, as well as training or education in fine arts and filmmaking.

Adventure programs are another important part of Camp Santa Maria, and require some of our staff members to have a greater level of certification and education. We are looking for staff members who are certified through nationally- and internationally-recognized organizations such as Red Cross, American Mountain Guide Association, the American Canoe Association, National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound.

Do you have a passion for the outdoors and connecting others to it? Have you worked at an environmental education program and want to continue teaching others about the natural world? Have you participated in programs through Wilderness Awareness School, Coyote Tracks or another Deep Nature connection program? Then Santa Maria may be the place for you. Our camp is located on over 1,000 acres in the Rocky Mountains at over 8,000 feet in elevation. We look for staff who can teach about the world in which we live. Come and share your passion for the outdoors with a younger generation.
