Howdy Folks!
I hope you are enjoying the winter season so far! I was talking with a parent the other day and they asked, “So, what goes on at camp in the winter?”. Well let me tell you what goes on. First, we are not up at camp much. Camp Santa Maria actually shuts down for most of the winter. The facilities crew keeps things in running when we are not there, by doing things like keeping pipes from freezing, cleaning cabins, doing repairs on buildings, and generally keeping camp in good shape. The office moves down to the Arapahoe Center YMCA facility in Lafayette for the winter. This is where we get ready for the next summer.
We do head up to camp every couple of weeks to get some things we forgot in the office, check on equipment, and get ready for groups that will start coming up to camp in March. Camp is really quiet during the winter. Michelle, says the horse are doing well, but they have had enough of the cold. The river is actually frozen over! Photos soon!
We spent a good part of December creating the new brochure, which if you have one, I hope you like it. We also spent time reviewing last year and seeing where we can make improvents. We have been calling people who were at camp last year to see if they are going to register for this year, and getting some great ideas from parents! Campers, make sure you get your ideas heard by emailing them to santamaria@ymcabv.org .
Camp Santa Maria went to the YMCA Mid America Camp Conference in Flint, Michigan where we did some presentations, talked with other camp staff and directors, and got some great ideas to try this summer. And perhaps the most exciting thing we do during the winter months is to begin putting together the 2011 Camp Santa Maria staff community! Getting in touch with staff from last year and recruiting new staff. We have had over 85 applications so far from people who want to come and be a part of the Santa Maria expereince! It is shaping up to be a fantastic summer!
Stay warm, get out and enjoy the winter, and soon enough you will be back at camp!
